My 5 Favorite Beginner-Friendly Houseplants (That Won’t Judge You for Forgetting to Water Them).
Starting your plant journey doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. At Finn’s Foliage, we believe everyone deserves to experience the joy of growing something green-no green thumb required.
Whether you’re new to houseplants or just want a few low- maintenance pals that don’t turn into divas when you miss a watering, these are five of my all- time favorites. They’re forgiving, beautiful, asdn fill of personality - just like the people who love them.
Monstera Deliciosa (The Instagram Queen)
If you’ve seen a plant on a throw pillow or coffee mug lately, it was probably a Monstera. But don’t let her popularity fool you, she’s as laid-back as she is stunning. With her iconic split leaves and fast growth, Monsteras make you feel like a plant pro even as we continue to develop our green thumbs.
Quick Tips
Light: Bright, indirect sunlight
Water: Every 1-2 weeks; let soil dry out in between waterings
Pro Tip: Wipe leaves occasionally to help them absorb light- and encourage those iconic leaf splits (fenestration)!
Pothos (The Plant That Can’t Be Stopped)
Golden, Marble, Neon - whatever variety you choose, pothos are unstoppable. These trailing vines grow fast, forgive neglect, ands will thrive just about anywhere you put them. Put them on a shelf, a hanging basket, or let them climb a moss poll or trellis - they’re here for a good time and a long time!
Quick Tips
Light: Low to bright, indirect light
Water: Every 1-2 weeks; relatively drought tolerant
Pro Tip: Snip long vines to promote fuller growth. You can use the cuttings (with nodes) to grow more plants!
Syngoniums (The Underrated Cutie)
Also known as arrowhead plants, syngoniums are soft ful and come in beautiful shades - think soft pinks, silvers and deep greens. They’re a great “next step” plant when you want something a little different but still easy going.
Quick Tips
Light: Low to medium indirect light
Water: Once a week; keep soil slightly moist but not soggy.
Pro Tip: Rotate regularly to keep it growing full and balanced - this plant loves to leave toward their light source.
ZZ Plant (The Unbothered Icon)
The ZZ is like the plant version of your chillest friend. It stores water in its thick rhizomes which means you can (accidentally) ignore it for weeks and it will still look like a glossy green dream. Perfect for busy folks, low-light corners, or anyone prone to plant guilt.
Quick Tips
Light: Low to medium light
Water: Every 3-4 weeks, allow to dry completely
Pro Tip: Overwatering is the only real danger - less is more!
Snake Plant (The Stand- Tall Survivor)
If plants gave off “don’t mess with me” vibes, the snake plant would lead the pack. Also called Sansevieria or Mother -in-law’s tongue, this architectural beauty is almost impossible to kill. It’s one of the few houseplants that thrives on neglect and can easily tolerate low light corners and dry air.
Quick Tips
Light: Low to bright, indirect light
Water: Every 2-4 weeks, drought tolerant
Pro Tip: Like to be snuggled in tight in their pots. Be careful not to give them too much room, which can lead to root rot.
